Why do popular girls...?

I'm in 8th grade, and it seems like the "popular" girls hang out with each other like 24/7. On Facebook they have like a ton of pictures together. Their status is always "hanging out with teah" or "hockey game with emma". Also why do they always wear sweatpants and headbands with ponytails and an Abercrombie tee?
